Port Sanilac, MI, on Lake Huron

Port Sanilac, MI, halfway up "The Thumb"

Internet and wi-fi is non-existent up here for getting the Blog out, so this may be getting published later than usual.

Today was a late departure because it was a short run up to Port Sanilac, MI. We refueled with a good fuel price then made the 10:00 bridge openings to get out to the St. Clair River.
Waiting for the 10:00 opening on the Black River

Soon we were going under the big bridge at Port Huron. The current was amazing under the bridge. All the lake water was flowing through this narrow opening. We were running 8.4 mph at 2100 rpm, which is about 1.5 mph slower than we should run with no current. At the Bridge, the current slowed us down to 5.9 mph, about 4 mph slower than we should have been running. I had heard that the effect of the current could be as great as 6 mph,so I was prepared.
Entering the St. Clair River from the Black River

Going under the famous "Blue Water" Bridge in Port Huron. The current coming in from Lake Huron was very swift.

As we went under the bridge, we spotted a ship coming toward the bridge in the channel. We hugged the Canadian side of the channel and passed the ship very closely.  We then proceeded out the ship channel into Lake Huron, the second of the Great Lakes in which we have cruised. The water was just beautiful. It was very blue and clear.
Here comes a big ship into Port Huron from Lake Huron

Very narrow channel as he is approaching the Blue Water Bridge that we just went under

We ran several miles out the ship channel before we turned to run North along the coast to Port Sanilac. About half way out the channel,we ran through a sailboat regatta made up of maybe 20 big boats. We were careful to yield the right of way to the vessels under sail, and we had to zig and zag to miss these sailboats and get through the fleet. Another incoming ship passed us in the channel and also scattered the sailboats. Showing his irritation at the fleet of boats crossing his path, the ship proceeded to sound five blasts of his horn meaning there was imminent danger of a collision. I have never heard that signal before!
Heading into Lake Huron on a BEAUTIFUL day!

The ride in Lake Huron today was a little choppy but nothing like our last Lake Erie ride.         We were in waves of 1-3', but it was not bad. We could handle it!

The Port Sanilac Harbor is nice. There is not much here, but we did find a washing machine and dryer at the marina which we really needed. There is a good break wall system and it is fairly calm in the harbor. There are a lot of "dock walkers" here and we have talked to many folks who are coming down to the boat, which is moored at the end of one of the main docks. We explain our Great Loop trip and tell them where we are from. People like to watch Maggie getting on and off the boat using the pet ramp. They also comment on Trooper who sits in the window in front of he lower console.

Tonight we ate dinner on board. We then walked a book from the marina into the very small downtown area of Port Sanilac. Not much here!

Tomorrow is another short day. We go North about 30 miles to Harbor Beach, MI.

Thanks for Reading!
