We are in Lorain, OH tonight, about 20 miles West of Cleveland. This puts us in Western Lake Erie!
First, some pics we took yesterday of the Grand River Marina where we stayed at Fairport Harbor, OH.

Sunrise now is around 6:30 AM. We were off the dock at Fairport at 6:50 this morning. Out the Fairport inlet into Lake Erie and then a hard left turn toward Cleveland. Weather was nice, very cool. We were in jackets most of the day. Seas were calm, maybe a little "lumpy", but not bad. After we passed Cleveland, the Lake flattened out nicely.

It did not take long after getting out onto the Lake from Fairport to see Cleveland. It was shining in the morning sun, and the tall buildings looked bright as they reflected the sunlight. Very impressive. We watched Cleveland for a long time. It is a big city and stands out on the horizon, even though we were more than 9 miles offshore from the city out in Lake Erie.

As we got abeam of Cleveland, the sky got cloudy and the seas flattened. Susan mused that it was "eerie" on Lake Erie. The lighting and the weather conditions were an interesting sight to say the least. We proceeded for the rest of the day under heavy overcast sky's.

At Avon Point, OH, we passed a huge OLD power plant with several tall smoke stacks. We started to see these stacks over 30 miles East of the site, and I used the stacks, as tiny as they were on the horizon, as a guide to steer the course we had set for the day. These stacks gradually got bigger and bigger, and when we passed the power plant, we saw they were several hundred feet high! This plant looked shut down, and it has probably been replaced by the Nuclear Plant near Geneva, OH.
We started seeing this old power plant about 30 miles before we came up on it |
Our course from outside the inlet at Fairport to the entrance to the inlet at Lorain was about 51 miles. We did a point to point route that was straight as a string. We arrived at the Lorain Inlet at about 12:55. This inlet has several big jetties set in a diagonal pattern. We could see the arrangement on the charts, and we steered around the outside jetty and through the entrance to the Black River at Lorain. Our marina was right at the entrance to the river. We can see the Lake over the breakwater at the marina.

The marina gave us our slip assignment over the VHF radio. Before we docked, we topped off the fuel and got a pump out. This is a very large facility. We are at the end of a very long dock and it is a hike to get to shore and to any facilities.
We are watching the weather for tomorrow. Winds are supposed to be 10-20 knots, but from the South from the shore. Seas are 1-3 going down to less than 2. There is a chance of T-Storms later. We want to go about 40 miles Northwest up to South Bass Island in the Lake Erie Islands. Right now I think we will go maybe mid morning, but it will be a game time call. Stay tuned! We have two more cruising days to get off Lake Erie.
Thanks for Reading!
