Our trip today was as pleasant as yesterday's trip was bad. It turned out to be a beautiful day after some morning clouds burned off. We left Detroit just before 8:00 AM, and got out to Lake St. Clair in about 45 minutes.

I was amazed at the size of this Lake. It reminded me of Lake Okechobbee in Florida. We followed a nicely marked ship channel across the Lake. The seas were choppy but not rough. It was a pleasant ride across the 20 miles of water. When we got close to the North shore, the water flattened out and the ride was wonderful.

The water on the North shore and in the St. Clair River was unreal. It was a beautiful blue-green and very clear. Just beautiful. There were hundreds of fisherman out fishing for Perch and Walleye. There were also more pleasure boats on the water than we have seen on the Lakes. It must have been the beautiful day! We saw a whole lot of Sea Ray's - both newer models and 1980's and 1990 models.

The St. Clair River is very wide. Most of the US side of the River features homes and some industry. The Canadian side is mostly rural and industrial near the several cities that we passed. There were several ships docked on the Canadian side. We also passed one ship Southbound and had a big ship behind us that chased us up the River.

I was amazed at the river currents that we have been bucking since we left Lake Erie yesterday. It is interesting to think about all the water that comes into the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers. All the water from Lake Michigan and Lake Superior flows into Lake Huron. All of the Lake Huron water flows into the St. Clair River, then into Lake St. Clair, then into the Detroit River and into Lake Erie. Top this off with an elevation differential between Port Huron and Lake Erie of about 8', and you can see the ingredients that make up a strong current. We noticed anywhere from 2 to 4 mph of "drag" that goes against us. It could be even worse as we go out the River into Lake Huron!
We got to Port Huron about 2:50 PM and had to wait for two bridge openings on the Black River here to get to our marina. The marina is the town marina right along the River. We are docked bow-in perpendicular to the River, right on the bank. It is a nice place.

The boat next to us came in from Gibraltar, MI on Lake Erie. He laughed and commiserated with us on our Lake Erie experiences. It was almost like "welcome to our world"! He is up here for boat races this weekend on Lake Huron. He races a boat that is in the 75 mph class. We saw some racing boats on the River as we came up from Lake St. Clair. There are a lot of boats here tonight, all going up and down the River where we are docked. Sort of like a boat parade. The good weather and the weekend has brought out the people!

Tomorrow we go up Lake Huron about 30 miles to Port Sanilac, MI. We will work our way up the Eastern coast of Michigan for the next week. The main part of Michigan is shaped like a "Mitten". We are traveling the "thumb" for the next few days. The crook of the thumb is Saginaw Bay, which we will cross and then we will be on the "fingers" of the mitten!
