Saturday, April 6 Jekyll Island to Sunbury, GA

Our Location for Saturday, April 6
Our Marina for Saturday, April 6
I have learned in 5 days on the Loop that Wi-Fi at most marinas is terrible. Such was the case last night in Sunbury, GA.

Almost 9 hours underway and 71 miles brought us to the Sunbury Crab Co Marina in Sunbury, GA. We left Jekyll Island at 7:20 and arrived at the Crab Company docks at 4:00. It was a long day on the water, but the weather was perfect, which made up for the two bad days we had on Thursday and Friday.

The Georgia coast is comprised of a number of huge barrier islands. At each barrier island there is a large body of water called a "Sound" that empties out into the Ocean. Rivers feed into each Sound, and the ICW connects the Sounds on the West Side of the Barrier Islands.

The ICW goes through the Sounds, and at several Sounds, the waterway actually goes into the Ocean as it winds around shoals and islands. This makes for a sometimes sporty ride as the ocean effect of wind, waves, and swells, influences the boat.

The ICW in Georgia can also be very shallow. We found this out in several areas where the water under our keel at low tide was less than 4'. (Susan was not operating the boat in these locations...ha ha)

The scenery on the way up the ICW on Saturday was relatively boring. Just marsh after marsh, after marsh. What look like islands on the charts are really masses of marshes. My mental concept of the area from studying the charts was that the islands were heavy with trees and foliage. No so at all. The smaller islands are mostly marshes or plains of grassy expanse. These areas provide little shelter from winds and storms.

Our destination for the night was Sunbury, GA. We chose Sunbury because we knew that it would be tough to get to Savannah in one day from Jekyll. Sunbury is about 40 miles from Savannah, so we
decided to split the trip and overnight at the marina that we read about on the web. Also, we did not want to anchor out, so the marina was a logical choice.

We pulled into Sunbury and we were met by the Owners. They helped us tie up and get the shore power connected. We washed the salt off the boat and filled our water tank.

Dinner was at the marina restaurant. Both meals were excellent. We pigged out on oysters!

So Sunday it will be on to Savannah.

Thanks for Reading!
The Bridge to Brunswick, GA. We visited St. Simons many times when this bridge was being built. Watching it go up over several Years was awesome!

A Beautiful Day! Looking at the Marshes as we travel up the ICW
