Getting away from the coast! |
Extremely HOT today! We were perspiring heavily before we left the dock. Tempers flared in the heat! After refueling, we left Liberty Landing and headed North on the Hudson River. The haze was unbelievably bad this morning making visibility sort of blurry instead of sharp and crisp. There was little if any breeze, but the river was very choppy from all of the water taxis and ferry boats. We dodged these water craft as they zipped back and forth and up and down the river.

Last of the ferry's and water taxis as we get close to the Bridge |
The water traffic thinned out just before we got to the George Washington Bridge that crosses the Hudson at Ft. Lee, NJ. From there North, the going was very smooth. We were lucky to be able to ride an incoming tide all the way up to Croton.
The Bridge is huge, and a very important artery into and out of The City |
Looking at the New Jersey side of the Bridge |
Notice the little red lighthouse just under the New York side of the Bridge |
We passed the Harlem River where it intersects with the Hudson. On the Jersey side of the river are high hills and cliffs that form the Palasaides. We passed Yonkers then went under the Tapan Zee Bridge that crosses the Hudson at Tarrytown, NY. Just North of the bridge is Sing Sing State Prison, right on the River.
Mountains in New Jersey???? This is part of the Palisaides |
The Tapan Zee Bridge is somewhere out there |

We are now in the Hudson River Valley. The river up here is very wide-perhaps 2 miles or more. The left or West bank reminds me of Chattanooga. Very high hills and cliffs with lots of tress. The cliffs go right down to the water. Seven or eight miles above the Tapan Zee bridge, we got to Haverstraw Bay and turned due East to get into Half Moon Bay where we entered Half Moon Marina. Steve is the dockmaster here and he was waiting for us and helped us dock. Very nice and very accommodating.
Looks like Chattanooga as we head up towards Haverstraw Bay |

A beautiful, Hot, Humid evening as we look West over Half Moon Bay |
It was a hot and humid cruise up the River, but we are now back in a river setting with beautiful mountains and scenery all around us. I just hope that the humidity and the haze let up so we can see the scenery clearly.
I met with a diver here at the marina this afternoon, and he will clean my boat bottom and check the zincs tomorrow. The bottom has not been cleaned since March.
We walked into Croton tonight and ate dinner at an Italian place. We checked out a grocery store. This town looks like a bedroom community for New York City. The town is heavily wooded and very green. US 9 runs through town and there is a big rail yard here for commuter trains. Looks like some sort of shop and marshaling yard.
We will stay here for at least two nights to re-provision and check out the town. We want to visit FDR's home in Hyde Park, which is about 45 miles North of here. Not sure whether to do it from Croton or our next stop at Kingston, NY.
Thanks for Reading!
