Tonight we remain in Panama City, and this Blog is published on the same day that it covers (for once)!
We pretty much decided last night that we would stay here one more day. Rick wanted to make sure that Linda from "Mopsy II" was OK to leave the boat and get Mark from the Hospital and into a Hotel until their daughter arrives on Thursday. We also wanted to give our dog Maggie another day on land to make sure she was OK from the Salmonella issue, which I think she is.
So, we hung out at the marina again on what turned out to be a beautiful day. We actually got to turn the heat off this afternoon and open the windows! This morning we went to Rick and Leila's on "Sun Gypsy" for Brunch that Rick cooked. It was great! We enjoyed visiting with them. Linda was also there and relayed the latest news on Mark. She is hoping that he will be released on Tuesday.
We are all glad that Mark is OK. Once he gets out of the Hospital and gets back to a routine, I know he will get to planning how he and Linda will finish the loop. They cross their wake in Hilton Head, and Linda is already talking of how they will get the boat back over here to finish the trip. This will probably come next year.
Today I received an email from a good friend from Ohio. He had just caught up on the Blogs that I posted yesterday, and his very astute comment on our Great Loop trip was simply that the theme of the trip might just be "Expect the Unexpected".
I relate this thought to what happened to Mark on Mopsy II on Friday night. His fall and ankle injury was so unexpected. Our chase of the best weather for crossing the Gulf and the on - again, off - again weather windows has been unexpected. Our dog's bout with Salmonella was totally unexpected.
But in the end, should we have expected that these events might occur? I would say on a trip that has taken us more than 5,000 miles so far, that yes, we should expect that these kinds of things will occur. I think that the key is how you handle the unexpected things with which you are presented. Linda and Mark will be fine once he heals. We will be fine when we get to Tarpon Springs and the weather is behind us. And Maggie allowed us to realize that pets on the Loop are fragile too.
One of our group actually departed today. Steve and Meredith and son Rick on "Free at Last" left very early this morning for Apalachicola. We hope to catch up with them in the next day or so.
Tomorrow we are definitely on for Apalachicola, FL. It will be a 56-60 mile trip, and we have decided to leave at 7:00.
Tonight it looks like the Gulf Crossing could come on Wednesday and Thursday. PassageWeather.com confirms that weather conditions will be OK. Tom Conrad has stated that on Wednesday night, the Gulf will be "magical". So, we are getting pumped! Monday in Apalachicola, Tuesday in Carrabelle. Wednesday we may be on our way!
Thanks for Reading!

"Mopsy II". The tragedy in all of this is that they will not be able to finish the Loop without considerable logistical challenges! |
