Moving South along Lake Michigan

No thunderstorms today! Yea!

We had a 70 mile trip today in so so weather. It was warm and humid and overcast the entire way. The wind was light from the North, which was behind us. The waves were big swells mainly from behind, which meant we were in a following sea all day. And we all know how "Blue Moon" just LOVES a following sea.

I had charted a route that took us close to shore the entire way. I was hoping that the winds from the North would abate some as we worked our way around some points of land that stuck out along the coast. We had mixed results. Not sure where the big swells were coming from, but at times they were in the 2-3 ft range and we alternated surfing the swells, then digging into them. The boat spun left to right, being pushed left and right by the following seas. At the end of the trip, I felt like a jar lid that someone had turned back and forth for 6 hours! But, It was nowhere near as bad as yesterday!

One thing that was worse than yesterday were the emergence of BITING FLIES! They started to appear in the fly bridge when we were out on the Lake and bite the you know what out of our legs. We applied bug spray, and that helped but the darn flies had a knack for finding places that the spray didn't reach, and hit us there. Like on the top of our feet just above the shoes.

We refueled again, found our marina, and docked for the night. We are right downtown in Grand Haven. The marina is a public park where lots of people are walking by and admiring the boats. It is a very vibrant place. Right across the street are the shops and restaurants. We did Italian tonight and it was very good. The Looper Harbor Host, Jim Angel, came by and introduced himself. He is very nice and offered to take us to any stores to which we needed to go.

We just got through watching the famous Grand Haven musical fountain. Across the harbor from the marina and the town sits a wooded hillside. The city of Grand Haven has built an huge fountain complex that is lighted. They have put in a serious sound system on the hillside. At 9:30 tonight, the show started. It was set to music with an announcer, and the fountain, probably computer operated, and the colored lights, and the music, put on a great show. We watched it from our fly bridge. Very cool thing here in Grand Haven. We have enjoyed our afternoon and evening in this town.

But, Chicago is calling and pulling us in her direction. Tomorrow we go 70 miles to St. Joseph, MI for the jump over the big water to the Windy City.
